Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

Is therapy confidential?

Therapy is a private and confidential space and virtual meetings are held on a secure platform. Exceptions to privacy are:

  • If you give me written permission to release information.

  • If you or someone else is at risk of significant, imminent harm and I have information that I believe could prevent that harm.

  • If it is believed that a child is at risk of harm.

  • If subpoenaed by a court of law.

  • Note that for couples, it requires the written permission of both partners to release any information from a couple’s file with the exception of any individual session notes that can be separated from the file.

  • Note that for children and youth, confidentiality will be discussed and agreed upon with you in advance.  My general practice is to provide space for privacy for young people with the exception of risk of significant harm yet we will work to provide regular updates to you about the therapy. Youth who meet certain legal precedents may be considered to be “Mature Minors” who can provide their own consent.

What is therapy like? How can it help?

  • Therapy is a collaborative process.  The therapist is a guide and expert in the change process and their areas of specialization, but you are the expert in your life, your values and decisions.

  • As a therapist, I will provide psychoeducation, guide the process and strive for you to feel heard, understood and respected.  To be most successful, it is important for you to be open and honest, curious and engaged in session and in completing any tasks that you agree would helpful to you.

  • Everything we talk about in therapy will relate to events, your feelings about those events and the stories you have about the events. Therapy will likely bring up many feelings.  I will work with you to process those feelings in healthy ways and to change any thoughts and stories that you don’t find to be helpful and adaptive to your goals.  Changing the stories and learning skills to become aware of and communicate your thoughts, feelings and needs are all positive outcomes of therapy and essential skills to healthy relationships.

  • Research clearly shows the importance of feeling heard, understood and respected and that the fit and approach of the therapist work for you.  It is important for you to be honest if you are not experiencing any of these key elements so that we can get back on track or support a referral that it is a better fit for you.

What is my financial investment?

  • Therapy is an investment in you and your future. In a recent podcast, Nir Eyal, author of Indistractable, asked a question – how would the person you are becoming be spending their time this week?  Great question!

  • Your investment – therapy sessions for individuals are typically 60 minutes with a fee of $220 in accordance with recommendations from the Psychologist’s Association of Alberta. The fee for couples is $240 per 60 minutes, however, some may choose a 90 minute session which I offer at a fee of $360 per session.  24 hours notice is required for all cancellations or the full fee will be charged.

  • As a Registered Psychologist, you may have coverage in your benefit plan, please check with your provider. I do not direct bill, however, I will provide you with a receipt for your benefits provider or for tax purposes as in some circumstances it can be considered a medical expense – please contact your accountant for more information.

  • While working virtually, my preferred method of payment is via credit card through my secure client portal processed via Stripe.  You may also pay via E-transfer to carolyn@adaptpsychology.ca

Do you direct bill?

  • I do not currently direct bill, with one exception – I am excited to be an approved provider for First Nations and Inuit clients under the Non-Insured Health Benefits Program. If you are given prior approval by them for therapy, I will be able to direct bill under that program.

  • As a Registered Psychologist, you may have some benefit coverage available to cover all or part of the sessions. Please reach out to your provider to find out what coverage exists. I always provide a detailed receipt that you may submit to your provider.

Do you provide Supervision for Registered Provisional Psychologists (AB)?

  • Yes, simply put, there is nothing that I love more than learning and supporting the learning and growth of others. When I began supervising Registered Provisional Psychologists back in the early 2000s, I knew that I had found part of my calling. I am excited to offer this opportunity to 1-2 people per year in my private practice.

  • I have training in Advanced Clinical Supervision and experience as a Clinical Supervisor and in the Supervision of Supervisors.  I am informed by a developmental approach in supporting the growth of supervisees.  My counselling approach is grounded in attachment theory, trauma informed practice and mindfulness approaches with training in Emotionally Focussed Therapy, EMDR and Grief Therapy. I have experience working with children, couples, families and individuals although in my current practice my focus is teens, adults and couples. As a former lawyer, I have a passion for ethics and ethical decision making.

  • The most important thing in this work, is the fit. If this opportunity is of interest, please reach out to me for a telephone consultation and more information about how to apply to work with me.  I am actively taking applications, however, all applicants must have their own employment/practice and caseload to ensure that their provisional hours can be attained. Fees for this service will be discussed at the time of the interview process.
